Sr Director Software Engineering

About the role

We are seeking a collaborative and innovative senior technology leader to drive the delivery of multiple products within our Nursing Health Education suite. This role is part of Elsevier’s Health division, focusing on preparing nursing students, supporting faculty, and helping healthcare organizations retain nurses.

Key responsibilities

• Lead several technology teams across Elsevier Health Education, overseeing design, development, delivery, and operation of scalable software solutions.
• Provide technical and organizational leadership, driving execution, modernization, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with product, architecture, data, quality, and business stakeholders to align technology investments with strategic priorities.
• Develop and execute multi‑year technology roadmaps, emphasizing cloud modernization, platform consolidation, API‑first design, and AI‑enabled capabilities.
• Establish engineering standards, architecture governance, security, scalability, and operational best practices.
• Evaluate emerging technologies such as generative AI and machine learning to enhance learning experiences.
• Build, mentor, and lead high‑performing engineering managers and technical leaders across geographically distributed teams.
• Drive workforce planning, succession planning, organizational design, and leadership development.

Required profile

• Proven ability to build and lead high‑performing, cross‑functional engineering teams.
• Experience in healthcare, education technology, or another regulated, data‑sensitive domain.
• Strong technical judgment with depth in architecture and strategic vision.
• Experience partnering with Product and UX teams to deliver customer‑facing outcomes across time zones.
