Specialty Assistant Store Manager (In Training)

About the role

The Home Depot is hiring a Specialty Assistant Store Manager in Training (SASM-IT) in Hammond, Indiana. This is a training position of up to 6 weeks, designed to give hands-on experience in the key responsibilities of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager, including mentorship, leadership development and exposure to Manager on Duty duties and oversight of the Specialty and Pro departments. The trainee works with the Store Manager, Assistant Store Managers, Home Services and Pro business partners to develop strategies that improve sales, customer service and profitability.

Key responsibilities

• Training and preparation (about 50% of the role): complete a structured program covering operations, customer service, sales and profitability, and company policies; learn staffing, scheduling, stock control, customer issue resolution and performance management, including the disciplinary process.
• Customer experience (about 15%): supervise associates in selling, lead the GET culture, and ensure customer concerns are resolved promptly.
• Sales and productivity (about 15%): help plan merchandise placement and stock integrity, and learn to operate store equipment and systems and manage daily financial operations.
• Operations management (about 10%): perform opening and closing duties, follow SOPs including safety compliance, and take steps to reduce shrink.
• Safety (about 10%): ensure self and associates follow safety and hazmat procedures.

Required profile

• Age 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States.
• High school diploma or GED; a bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.
• At least 3 years of work experience, with 1+ year of leadership experience preferred.
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams; competencies include action orientation, collaboration, customer focus, results driving and resourcefulness.
• Typical reporting line to the Store Manager, with no direct reports; overnight travel under 5% of the time.
• Must be able to stand, walk and lift moderate-weight materials (8-20 pounds).
