Software Engineer II – Backend (Merchant Advocacy)

About the role

Affirm is reinventing credit with a transparent, consumer‑friendly buy‑now‑pay‑later model. The Merchant & Partner Lifecycle team is modernizing its architecture, and you will lead the development of a new lifecycle‑orchestrator service that powers multiple connected systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design and scale the core platform to support hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define scope and deliver joint projects.
• Partner with the Engineering Manager and Team Lead to execute the long‑term technical vision.
• Implement technical strategies for complex requirements, using forward‑looking approaches.
• Leverage agentic development tools (e.g., Claude Code) to automate parts of the development workflow.
• Raise engineering standards, tooling, and processes across the organization.

Required profile

• 3+ years of experience as a backend software engineer.
• Strong understanding of Domain‑Driven Design, distributed systems, and their impact on performance and maintainability.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, especially for asynchronous specs, ADRs, and project plans.
• Experience designing, building, and launching backend services using technologies such as AWS, gRPC, Snowflake, Kotlin, Python, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with monitoring and alerting tools (Sentry, Rollbar, Chronosphere, Kibana).
• Either a relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
