Software Engineer – Generalist

About the role

Stainless is a fast‑growing tech startup building the next generation of APIs. As a Generalist Software Engineer you will work on core systems that will power the company for years, collaborating across the team and taking ownership of both quick‑turn tasks and deep architectural decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain foundational services and APIs used internally and by external customers.
• Contribute to all layers of the stack, from low‑level infrastructure to high‑level developer tooling.
• Write clean, well‑architected code and create reusable abstractions for other engineers.
• Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and on‑call rotations.
• Help shape the engineering culture by sharing knowledge and mentoring teammates.

Required profile

• Proven ability to build complex systems with solid design and architecture.
• Experience maintaining a popular open‑source project or internal abstractions used across an organization.
• Comfort consuming third‑party APIs and building APIs that others will consume.
• Strong empathy for developers of all backgrounds and a passion for improving developer experience.
• Self‑motivated, quick learner, and able to deliver high‑quality work rapidly.

Required skills

• Expertise in TypeScript.
• Familiarity with GraphQL and its trade‑offs.
• Experience working with abstract syntax trees (e.g., lint rules, codemods, compilers).
• Designing and stewarding APIs at scale.
