Software Engineer, Backend

About the role

VITL is seeking an experienced backend software engineer to design and build the core platform that powers its health‑tech solutions. You will work directly with the Head of Product & Engineering and the CEO, shaping architecture from the ground up and influencing the engineering culture.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement greenfield core systems, including APIs, database schemas, infrastructure, and data pipelines.
• Own end‑to‑end feature delivery, from user research and specification to production deployment.
• Ensure high performance, scalability, and maintainability of all backend services.
• Collaborate closely with product and design teams to iterate quickly based on real user feedback.
• Handle PHI/PII in compliance with HIPAA and company security policies.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience building and shipping production backend systems.
• Proven track record of taking ownership in fast‑moving, early‑stage environments.
• Strong communication skills and ability to write clear technical documentation.
