Simulation Engineer – Discrete Event Modeling

About the role

We are seeking a Simulation Engineer (DES) to develop and analyze discrete‑event simulation models that support manufacturing and material‑flow decisions for an automotive client in Lansing, MI. The role is a 6‑month fixed‑term position reporting to the manufacturing engineering team.

Key responsibilities

• Build discrete‑event simulation models using Autodesk FlexSim for use cases such as inter‑shop buffers, ASRS sizing, AGV flows, and shop overspeed trade‑offs.
• Translate high‑level factory requirements (demand, shift pattern, product mix, FPY, MTBF/MTTR) into simulation‑ready input assumptions and scenarios.
• Run scenario and sensitivity studies to confirm line and shop net JPH versus targets, quantify overspeed, OPR/TEE, buffer requirements, and evaluate jobs‑per‑shift regularity and risk envelopes.
• Summarize findings in decision‑focused reports and slide decks for manufacturing engineering and program leadership.
• Collaborate with layout, material‑flow, and industrial engineering teams to align assumptions with real‑world constraints.
• Follow client DES standards and libraries for model structure, naming, documentation, and handoff.

Required profile

• 3+ years experience in automotive manufacturing engineering with direct ownership of discrete‑event simulation projects.
• Expert‑level proficiency with Autodesk FlexSim.
• Demonstrated experience modeling multi‑line assembly systems, stochastic behavior, and throughput/bottleneck analysis.
• Solid understanding of manufacturing KPIs such as JPH, JPS, OEE/TEE, MTBF/MTTR, WIP and buffer sizing.
• Ability to clean and structure input data, define scenarios, and communicate model limitations to non‑technical stakeholders.
