Ship Cook/Steward – Temporary

About the role

The University of Miami seeks a temporary Ship Cook/Steward to support daily food service and living‑quarter upkeep aboard the research vessel F.G. Walton Smith. You will feed up to 20 scientists and crew while maintaining a clean, safe galley environment.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, cook, and serve meals for the vessel’s crew, accommodating special dietary needs.
• Operate kitchen equipment, purchase provisions, and manage food inventory within budget.
• Maintain sanitation, cleanliness, and upkeep of the galley, mess area, and living quarters.
• Monitor food costs, keep accurate records, and drive a vehicle/van for supply runs.
• Participate in safety drills and assist with loading and unloading cargo.

Required profile

• High school diploma (culinary school completion preferred).
• Minimum one year experience as a chef or steward on a vessel.
• STCW certification.
• Ability to work independently under variable weather and sea conditions.
