Ship Assist & Escort Captain

About the role

The Captain will command Curtin's ASD ship‑assist and escort tugs in the San Pedro Bay Port Complex, providing docking, undocking and escort services for deep‑draft vessels. This full‑time, harbor‑based position supports 24/7 operations and works closely with Harbor/State Pilots and Vessel Traffic Service.

Key responsibilities

• Operate ASD/Z‑drive tractor tugs to assist and escort container ships, tankers, car carriers and bulk carriers.
• Coordinate with pilots, VTS, line handlers and terminal operators using VHF radio and Vessel Management System.
• Plan and execute assist/escort jobs, including rigging, bridles and cordage preparation.
• Maintain compliance with Curtin standards, USCG, ABS and Sub‑M requirements and complete accurate record‑keeping.

Required profile

• Ability to think clearly under stress and follow chain of command.
• Physical capability to lift 100 lb, work on uneven ground, climb ladders and swim.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills in a fast‑paced harbor environment.

Required skills

• Master of Towing Vessels, Near Coastal or 500 GRT Master, Near Coastal with TOAR.
• TWIC Card, Radar Observer Unlimited, MROP FCC License, STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft.
• Experience operating ASD/Z‑drive tugs and ship‑assist/escort towing methods.
• Proficiency with VHF radio etiquette, Vessel Management System (VMS) and VTS reporting.
