Senior / Staff / Principal Platform Engineer

About the role

AppGate builds a Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solution and Cyber Advisory Services, and is investing in the foundational systems that power its appliances. It is looking for a Senior, Staff or Principal Platform Engineer with deep expertise in Python, Linux systems and production platform engineering. You will design, build and maintain the software that integrates AppGate services with the underlying operating system, in a highly technical, hands-on role close to the OS. Depending on level, you will own significant platform components, lead cross-cutting initiatives, set technical direction and mentor engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain reliable Python services, applications and libraries supporting the ZTNA platform
• Build software managing Linux processes, services, namespaces, permissions, capabilities, signals and filesystems
• Maintain systemd units, socket-activated services, cgroup resource controls and application lifecycle management
• Instrument applications with OpenTelemetry (metrics, logs, traces) and set observability standards
• Troubleshoot TCP/IP, TLS, routing, firewalls and network namespaces
• Develop automation for provisioning, configuring and operating distributed PostgreSQL databases
• Improve internal development, testing, build and release tools
• Contribute to Linux platform architecture, engineering standards and best practices
• Lead initiatives, take part in design and code reviews, and mentor engineers
• Communicate through technical documentation and design proposals in a remote work environment

Required profile

• Significant software, platform or systems engineering experience with production systems; 5+ years for Senior, 8+ for Staff, 12+ for Principal, hired on demonstrated ability and impact
• Strong written and verbal communication in an asynchronous, remote culture
• Willingness to learn independently and take ownership of systems and projects
• Comfortable developing and improving internal engineering tools and pipelines

Required skills

• Expert Python, including production-grade, testable code
• TCP/IP, TLS, routing, firewalls and network troubleshooting
• Linux, including users/groups and permissions; systemd familiarity is a plus
• Cryptography basics: symmetric/asymmetric encryption, hashing, digital signatures, key exchange
• Preferred: Debian packaging, STIGs, TeamCity, EnterpriseDB PGD, VMware vSphere, Docker, AWS, Kubernetes, OpenTelemetry
