Senior Software Engineer – Matching and Recommendations

About the role

At Bumble, the Machine Learning team in Recommendations builds intelligent systems that power meaningful connections for millions of members. As a Senior Software Engineer you will own the technical direction of the recommendations platform, shaping how users discover matches, friends, and content.

Key responsibilities

• Define and evolve the architecture of Bumble’s large‑scale recommendations platform, balancing relevance, health, reliability and latency.
• Lead design of distributed systems that serve retrieval, ranking, feature delivery, experimentation and feedback loops across multiple teams.
• Mentor senior engineers, raise engineering standards, and drive foundational initiatives such as service decomposition and AI‑assisted tooling.
• Contribute hands‑on code, prototypes and production implementations to solve high‑leverage technical problems.

Required profile

• 6+ years building large‑scale backend or distributed systems with a track record of delivering cross‑team initiatives.
• Deep expertise in high‑scale recommendation or ranking architectures, including retrieval, candidate generation and feedback loops.
• Experience building cloud‑native platforms on Google Cloud Platform or comparable public cloud environments.
• Proven ability to define technical strategy, influence architecture across teams and partner with product, data science and ML leadership.
• Track record of mentoring engineers and improving system reliability, observability and operational excellence.

Required skills

• Go, Kotlin, Java (or similar modern languages).
• Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and cloud‑native architecture.
• Design and operation of distributed systems at scale.
• Recommendation systems, ranking architectures and experimentation frameworks.
• Machine learning and AI fluency, including generative AI tools.
• GIS experience (nice to have).
