Senior Software Engineer - Database

About the role

Airwallex, the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Database SRE team. You will design and build the platforms, automation and AI-driven tooling that power the company's database infrastructure, working across PostgreSQL, Google CloudSQL, Redis, Google Memorystore and GCP. The role is based in Seattle, with three days a week in the office (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday).

Key responsibilities

• Build a unified database observability platform giving real-time visibility into availability, security posture, reliability metrics and latency.
• Design secure MCP interfaces so AI agents can safely query and interact with production databases.
• Develop an agentic AI DBA to automate performance tuning, capacity planning, schema review, incident triage and remediation.
• Create self-service workflows for provisioning, configuring and scaling PostgreSQL and Redis instances with built-in security and compliance guardrails.
• Establish reliability practices for connection pooling, query optimization, backup and recovery, failover and change management, and take part in on-call rotations.
• Partner with product engineers to diagnose performance issues and improve schema design and data modelling.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in a backend language such as Python, Go, Java or Kotlin.
• Deep experience with PostgreSQL, including performance tuning, query optimization, replication, backup and recovery and schema design.
• Hands-on experience with Redis, data modelling, clustering and persistence strategies.
• Track record of building automation, tooling or platforms that replace manual operational work.
• Strong system design skills and comfort owning the roadmap and outcomes.

Required skills

• Preferred: Google CloudSQL and Google Memorystore.
• Preferred: infrastructure as code (Terraform), Kubernetes and Docker.
• Preferred: internal developer platforms, database-as-a-service systems or self-service infrastructure tooling.
• Preferred: AI/ML, LLM integration or MCP familiarity.
• Preferred: observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus or Datadog.
• Fintech, payments or regulated industry experience is preferred.
