Senior Inpatient DRG Medical Coder

About the role

UnitedHealth Group (Optum) is hiring a full-time (40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, normal business hours) Senior Inpatient DRG Medical Coder in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The role involves coding inpatient hospital claims using ICD-10 codes and DRGs, with the option to telecommute from anywhere in the U.S.

Key responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10 CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG and abstraction codes for facility services in line with official coding guidelines and the facility's client guidelines
• Review patient charts and abstract additional data elements as needed
• Query physicians when appropriate
• Maintain coding quality and productivity at the required level and keep coding knowledge current through department meetings and training
• Follow AAPC and AHIMA ethical standards and follow any additional tasks assigned by the manager

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• A professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC (e.g. CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CIC, CCS-P) kept up to date annually
• 3+ years of inpatient DRG coding experience in an acute care setting
• Ability to work weekends, holidays and overtime when business needs arise; telecommuters must meet the company's telecommuter policy and have a dedicated, private workspace and reliable high-speed internet

Required skills

• ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and DRG coding with an encoder
• Intermediate PC skills in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Excel and EMR systems
