Senior Infrastructure Software Engineer - AI Inference Core
cerebras · Sunnyvale
Job description
About the role
Cerebras Systems builds the world's largest AI chip, which delivers training and inference speeds over 10 times faster than GPU-based cloud services. The Core Infrastructure team builds the software systems that power engineering workflows across machines, clusters, development environments and hardware, using orchestration frameworks, execution engines, scheduling systems, test infrastructure and developer tools. This role is a Senior Infrastructure Software Engineer who designs and builds the core software behind Cerebras' engineering infrastructure, working on Python frameworks, orchestration systems, distributed execution, scheduling, test infrastructure and developer tooling.
Key responsibilities
- Design, develop, test and maintain Python frameworks and services that orchestrate engineering workflows across machines and clusters.
- Build reusable abstractions for scheduling, distributed execution, resource management, test execution, workflow planning and failure recovery.
- Define clear APIs, module boundaries, extension points and data models so infrastructure systems can evolve without becoming hard to maintain.
- Reason about concurrency, asynchronous execution, multiprocessing, state management, retries, idempotency, cancellation and partial failures.
- Debug complex issues spanning Python applications, operating systems, processes, filesystems, networking, remote machines and distributed services.
- Write high-quality automated tests and documentation for widely reused infrastructure.
- Partner with platform, CI, release, quality, ML systems and product engineering teams to turn requirements into scalable software designs.
Required profile
- 5+ years of professional software-engineering experience.
- Strong software-engineering fundamentals, independent problem solving and systems thinking.
- Experience designing maintainable software systems, libraries, frameworks, backend services or developer-facing APIs.
- Good judgment on software architecture, abstraction boundaries, design patterns and long-term maintainability.
- Preferred: BS/MS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Required skills
- Strong proficiency in Python and understanding of its runtime behavior.
- Understanding of concurrency (processes, threads, async execution, synchronization, shared state).
- Foundational understanding of operating systems and distributed systems (retries, timeouts, idempotency, eventual consistency).
- Preferred: asyncio, multiprocessing, pytest, Kubernetes, CI/build/release tooling.
