Senior Engineering Manager, Capacity Engineering

About the role

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable and steerable AI systems. The Capacity Engineering team owns the data, tooling and operational systems that plan, measure and maximize utilization of the company’s compute fleet. As Senior Engineering Manager you will lead the engineers who design, build and operate these production systems, set technical direction and ensure reliability for research, inference, infrastructure and finance stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Hire, onboard, coach and retain senior and staff engineers; run performance conversations and foster a culture of ownership and rigor.
• Partner with internal customers (research engineering, inference, infrastructure, finance) to translate needs into a prioritized roadmap across data platform, planning and efficiency.
• Define and enforce production standards: well‑tested Python and SQL, latency and completeness SLOs, sustainable on‑call practices.
• Own reliability and incident response for load‑bearing systems, establishing SLOs and reducing operational toil.
• Scale the function as the fleet diversifies, forecasting headcount, skill gaps and new provider integrations.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing software or infrastructure engineering teams, including hiring senior engineers and developing people.
• Strong background in production data engineering, distributed systems or observability, with hands‑on ability to review designs and debug issues.
• Familiarity with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP or Azure), Kubernetes‑based infrastructure and modern observability stacks.
• Track record of setting and executing an engineering roadmap in a high‑autonomy, multi‑stakeholder environment.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain technical metrics to engineers and financial forecasts to executives.
