Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property Litigation

About the role

Amgen is hiring a Senior Counsel for Intellectual Property Litigation to take direct responsibility for U.S. and international patent disputes in judicial and administrative tribunals, from issue identification through resolution. The role works closely with outside counsel and other in-house attorneys and staff, and is preferably based in Thousand Oaks, California, though it may be remote in the U.S.; 15-20% domestic and global travel is anticipated.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and drive case strategies, including infringement, validity and enforceability positions
• Take part in witness interviews, discovery (production, depositions, discovery responses), motion and brief drafting, trial preparation and participation at trial and on appeal
• Counsel others on intellectual property strategy for Amgen's business and research
• Negotiate and draft confidential disclosure agreements, protective orders and settlement agreements, and take part in mediations

Required profile

• J.D. or LL.M. from an accredited law school, admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction
• Four years of experience practicing intellectual property law
• Preferred: seven years litigating U.S. patent disputes in federal and/or administrative courts, with 4+ years on biotechnology matters, trial experience, U.S. biosimilar litigation experience and some exposure to foreign adversarial proceedings
• Management and leadership experience, and demonstrated client service focus

Required skills

• Analytic, legal drafting, oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and in teams, meet tight deadlines and manage complex projects
• Preferred: working knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology or cellular biology

• Annual salary range of $250,321.60 to $338,670.40, depending on skills, experience and qualifications
