Senior Backend Software Engineer (Java)

About the role

Atlassian is hiring a Senior Backend Software Engineer in San Francisco, working remotely. The role involves driving large, complex projects from technical design to launch, tackling architecture challenges and mentoring junior engineers. Candidates are expected to transfer their depth of knowledge from their current language into Java.

Key responsibilities

• Drive large, complex projects autonomously, from technical design to launch
• Tackle complex architecture challenges, apply architectural standards and start using them on new projects
• Lead code reviews and documentation, and take on complex bug fixes, especially on high-risk problems
• Be an example of thorough, meaningful code reviews
• Partner across engineering teams on company-wide initiatives spanning multiple projects
• Mentor junior members of the team

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience building and developing backend applications
• Bachelor's or Master's degree, with a preference for Computer Science; senior-level experience with one or more prominent languages such as Java, Python, Kotlin, Go or Scala is required
• Understanding of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS industries, with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Fluency in one database technology (e.g. RDBMS such as Oracle or Postgres, or NoSQL such as DynamoDB or Cassandra)
• Experience designing and implementing well-tested, highly scalable and performant microservices and/or distributed systems
• Practical knowledge of agile methods (e.g. XP, Scrum) and ability to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, space and time
• Experience mentoring engineers and influencing decision makers, considering customer impact in technical decisions

What we offer

• Base pay for new hires in the United States ranging from $149,400 to $235,000 depending on the geographic pay zone
