Senior AI Applications Engineer

About the role

Citi is looking for a Senior AI Applications Engineer (Applications Development Senior Programmer Analyst) to join its engineering team. The role combines a solid backend engineering foundation with growing AI expertise, building applications that use Large Language Models (LLMs) and the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It also covers integration and Level 3 support for more than 20 vendor tax applications used in Tax Reporting, Tax Diligence and Tax Withholding.

Key responsibilities

• Build and deploy LLM-powered applications with prompt engineering, RAG and basic agentic workflows
• Implement MCP to connect AI models with local or remote data sources and tools
• Design, build and maintain high-performance RESTful APIs
• Write, optimize and troubleshoot SQL queries, views and schemas in Microsoft SQL Server
• Use autonomous AI software engineers (such as Devin) to write tests and speed up development
• Perform integration and L3 support for vendor tax apps, working with vendors and internal TI and IT partners
• Carry out feasibility studies, time and cost estimates, IT planning and risk assessment, and monitor the full development lifecycle
• Advise users and clients, recommend programming solutions, and act as a coach to junior analysts
• Assess risk and uphold compliance with laws, rules and regulations

Required profile

• 5-8 years of relevant experience
• 2-5 years in backend API architecture, data validation and security protocols
• Experience in application integration, systems analysis and programming, and project implementation
• Ability to work with limited supervision, independently and as a subject matter expert

Required skills

• Hands-on experience integrating enterprise LLMs (OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude) via APIs with LangChain or LlamaIndex
• Understanding or direct experience implementing MCP
• Strong Oracle proficiency, including relational database design and query tuning
• Preferred: Devin or similar AI agents, Java/J2EE, Spring and Jasper, Red Hat Linux, Kubernetes/OpenShift, AWS, CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Docker), JIRA
