Research Technician I – Polyurethane Processing

About the role

Join BASF’s Performance Materials team in Wyandotte, MI as a Research Technician I, supporting polyurethane R&D and development projects. You will blend chemicals, conduct experiments, and ensure smooth operation of processing equipment to drive innovative, sustainable material solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research, testing, and data collection related to polyurethane processing and product development.
• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues with polyurethane processing equipment.
• Collaborate with engineers and scientists to improve formulations, processes, and technologies.
• Maintain, operate, and repair laboratory equipment such as mixers, pumps, and mix heads.
• Provide technical support to development and production teams to enhance efficiency and product quality.
• Document experimental procedures, results, and observations with accurate records.
• Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment and assist with upgrades or modifications.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements in all laboratory activities.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2‑5 years of hands‑on experience in polyurethane processing and production.
• 2‑5 years of experience troubleshooting and maintaining polyurethane processing or other mechanical equipment.
• Understanding of chemical processing techniques including mixing, molding, and curing.
• Ability to operate mobile equipment, hydraulic presses, and lift at least 50 lb.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as Karl Fischer titration (a plus).
• Experience with low‑pressure, high‑pressure, and continuous polyurethane processing equipment (preferred).
