Research & Development Intern

About the role

Saputo, a top 10 global dairy processor, is hiring a Research & Development Intern in Waupun. The intern researches, designs and evaluates materials, assemblies, processes and equipment within the plants, samples milk, whey and cheese products and analyzes the results, and provides technical support to designated U.S. plants.

Key responsibilities

• Perform microbiological, analytical and organoleptic analysis of milk, whey and cheese products against government, customer and Saputo specifications, and carry out all lab testing.
• Understand and comply with Good Manufacturing Practices.
• Prepare samples and run tests such as moisture, pH, salt, fat, total solids, chlorides, COD, rennet, starter activity, Mojonnier, Kjeldahl and gel electrophoresis, then interpret the results.
• Set up, operate, maintain, clean and calibrate lab equipment daily, and report results promptly.
• Monitor raw material utilization, plant efficiencies and ingredient recoups, and help recommend, install and commission new plant equipment and processes.
• Review cheese make records, analyze plant problems and take part in corrective actions.
• Document research work and assist in coordinating product development activities at the plants.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Dairy Technology or a related field.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, and to interpret technical information in mathematical and narrative form.
• Flexibility to work varied hours, travel 50% of the time, and work scheduled hours plus overtime when needed.
• Excellent writing skills, professional communication with press and community contacts, and corporate communications experience or education.
• Self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, able to multi-task and work independently and in a team.

Required skills

• Data collection, analysis and reporting with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.
