R&D Technician – First Shift

About the role

The R&D Technician supports research and development staff in product development, prototype production, and manufacturing support. The role involves hands‑on work with equipment, process monitoring, and continuous improvement to help deliver sustainable fusion technology.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in building new products and magnet prototypes.
• Prepare prototypes for internal or external evaluation to ensure robustness.
• Conduct process monitoring, equipment capability checks and troubleshooting, and implement viable solutions.
• Set up, operate, troubleshoot and maintain R&D equipment.
• Assist with installation and readiness of new projects.
• Support senior R&D staff with testing, specification development and establishing manufacturing processes.
• Maintain accurate project records and suggest continuous improvements.
• Provide technical assistance to QA, QC, engineering and management.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; minimum 3 years experience with hand and power tools.
• 3‑5 years experience in mechanical/electrical assembly, plumbing, vacuum and cryogenic systems.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lb and work safely around heat, cold, strong magnets, high voltage and cryogenics.
• Willingness to work nights, weekends or on‑call as needed.

Required skills

• Hand tools, power tools and precision measuring instruments.
• Mechanical and electrical assembly, soldering and wiring.
• Vacuum systems, cryogenic systems and handling of LN₂ and helium.
• Composites fabrication, prepreg lay‑up, vacuum resin infusion and mold preparation.
• Winding equipment operation and high‑temperature superconducting material processing.
• Reading electrical schematics, P&IDs and using PLC or similar data‑analysis software.
• Forklift operation and crane/hoist experience (MA 3A license).
• Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
