R&D Senior Mechanical Engineer - Electric Motor Design

About the role

ABB's NEMA Motors Division, the global leading electric NEMA motors manufacturer, is looking for an experienced electric motor design engineer to join its R&D team in Fort Smith. The role reports to the Engineering Manager and is fully onsite. You will solve complex engineering challenges independently, mentor junior team members and contribute to R&D initiatives that create business value.

Key responsibilities

• Lead electric motor design and analysis, optimizing performance with FEA and closed-form solutions
• Analyze airflow, vibration and sound levels, and propose and validate improvements
• Lead design optimization projects focused on manufacturing considerations, cost reduction and comprehensive testing and validation
• Work across technical and functional teams, generate intellectual property, document findings and turn business drivers into technical solutions

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in engineering and 8+ years of experience in electric motor or rotating equipment design
• Knowledge of advanced design methodologies (FEA), manufacturing processes and customer support
• Ability to produce accurate documentation, detailed drawings, BOMs and engineering records, and support design changes
• Strong command of mechanical performance fundamentals and manufacturing processes such as die casting, machining, stamping, plastic molding and fabrication
• Proficiency in engineering analysis, data reporting and technical presentations
• Work authorization to work for ABB in the US

Preferred qualifications

• Master's degree in engineering, Lean Six Sigma or PMP certification
• SAP, Ansys and SolidWorks CSWP
• Working knowledge of UL, CSA, CE, IEEE, IEC and NEMA compliance
