Mechanical Designer

About the role

The Mechanical Designer at ABB's NEMA Motors Division in Fort Smith reports to the Design Manager and works onsite. The role covers creating, developing and maintaining high-quality mechanical designs in SolidWorks to support new product development, continuous improvement and plant and production needs. It focuses on electric motors and drives.

Key responsibilities

• Create and manage detailed 3D models, assemblies, drawings and GD&T/tolerance analyses in SolidWorks, keeping them accurate and aligned with design standards.
• Develop manufacturable mechanical solutions for electric motors and drives, including aluminum die castings, cast iron components, plastic injection-molded parts and other precision elements.
• Work with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and Product Management to match design intent with manufacturability, cost targets and production constraints.
• Support prototype builds, take part in testing, carry out root-cause analysis, mentor junior designers and improve design workflows.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (preferred) with at least 2 years of experience, or Associate's degree in Mechanical Design/Drafting (preferred) with at least 4 years of experience.
• Expertise in complex part and assembly modeling for production-ready designs.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis and manufacturing processes such as die casting, machining, stamping, plastic molding and fabrication.
• Ability to produce accurate production documentation, including drawings, BOMs and engineering records.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
• US work authorization required.

Preferred experience

• SolidWorks PDM, SolidWorks CSWP certification, FEA or simulation tools, SAP or PLM systems.
• PMP or Lean Six Sigma certification, and working knowledge of UL, CSA, IEEE and NEMA compliance.
