R&D Production Test Engineer

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an experienced R&D Production Test Engineer to support the testing and de‑risking of high‑temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Embedded in the R&D organization, you will work closely with magnet physicists and manufacturing experts to develop test methodologies, execute campaigns, and drive continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Lead magnet and related test campaigns in cryogenic, vacuum, and high‑current environments.
• Develop detailed test procedures, ensure data integrity, and manage instrumentation.
• Support test‑stand upgrades to increase test rate and data quality.
• Design, analyze, and build test equipment, including mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems.
• Maintain documentation of test requirements, risks, and safety protocols.
• Manage test schedules, budgets, and technical drawings (P&IDs, CAD, schematics).
• Improve test processes for repeatability and efficiency.
• Analyze test data, create custom analysis tools, and present findings.
• Lead anomaly investigations in collaboration with physicists and engineers.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or applied physics.
• At least 2 years of hands‑on testing experience.
• Proven ability to operate test stands and collaborate across functions.
• Strong background in test planning, data analysis, and test‑equipment design.
• Knowledge of electromagnetic fundamentals and troubleshooting complex systems.
• Passion for process improvement and innovative problem‑solving.
• Excellent communication skills and self‑motivation.
