About the role

The Rare Materials Metadata Specialist will join Georgetown University’s Technical Services department to create and enhance bibliographic metadata for the Nicholas Scheetz Book Collection in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections. This is a full‑time, one‑year fixed‑term appointment with the possibility of renewal.

Key responsibilities

  • Create original bibliographic records for rare materials and enter them into Alma.
  • Search Alma and OCLC Connexion for existing records and update item records as needed.
  • Perform enhanced copy cataloging and enrich metadata using MARC and non‑MARC standards.
  • Physically process items using rare‑book ID strips, Tyvek envelopes, and barcodes.
  • Assist with reference queries and write descriptive text for exhibitions.
  • Collaborate with librarians, specialists, paraprofessionals, and the Curator of Rare Books.

Required profile

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA‑accredited program or an advanced degree with cataloging experience.
  • At least two years of experience in original and enhanced copy cataloging.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MARC and non‑MARC metadata formats, standards, and schemas.
  • Familiarity with special collections and rare‑book handling procedures.
