Radio Communications Specialist I

About the role

The Radio Communications Specialist I supports Texas A&M Forest Service field operations by maintaining and troubleshooting digital computer and FM radio communication systems, ensuring compliance with FCC regulations, and providing emergency communication support.

Key responsibilities

• Install, modify, diagnose, and repair digital computer systems and FM radio transceiver communications systems, including cable connections and power loss calculations.
• Maintain service logs, asset control, inventory control, and cost accounting systems through documentation and data entry.
• Manage TFS credit cards and assigned property in accordance with policies.
• Participate in agency‑sponsored training and occasional travel, including overnight stays.
• Ensure all communications software is properly licensed and programmed, and remain available for emergency response and field communications setup.

Required profile

• Associate degree in Applied Sciences or related technical field.
• 5‑10 years of customer service experience, preferably with FM communications systems in a wildland fire agency.
• Valid Texas driver’s license and completion of IS‑100, IS‑700, L‑180 training.
• NWCG qualification as Radio Operator (RADO) and Incident Communications Technician (COMT).

Required skills

• FM communications system installation, programming, and troubleshooting.
• Computer (PC) assembly, repair, and maintenance.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Amateur Radio License.
