4G/5G/RF Engineer

About the role

The 4G/5G/RF Engineer (Wireless Systems Research Engineer III/IV/Senior I) works under general direction to manage internal wireless network systems while conducting and supporting basic and applied research in next‑generation wireless technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Develop research proposals, evaluate technical approaches, and produce network designs for grant submissions.
• Design, document, configure, install, and test research wireless networks, including 4G/5G, RAN, O‑RAN, D2D, V2X, NTN and cognitive radio systems.
• Provide Tier I‑III support, perform diagnostics, security assessments, and develop disaster‑recovery plans for network equipment.
• Prepare and present monthly/quarterly project updates and deliverables to sponsors and at industry symposia.
• Recruit, supervise, and train graduate assistants and student technicians, fostering professional development.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Six to nine years of experience in wireless networking, with expertise in 4G/5G core, transport, and radio access technologies.
• Ability to obtain a Secret‑level US security clearance and a US passport for domestic/international travel.

Required skills

• LAN/L2 switching (copper, fiber, Wi‑Fi, VLANs, spanning‑tree).
• IP networking and L3 routing (subnetting, static/dynamic routing).
• Cellular technologies: 4G (MME, SGW, PCRF, eNB) and 5G (AMF, SMF, UPF, PCF, NEF, gNB).
• RF fundamentals, antenna concepts, and O‑RAN integration.
• Network security, backup, and disaster‑recovery procedures.
