Public Safety Dispatcher

About the role

The Santa Ana School Police Department, under the direction of the Chief of School Police Services or designee, seeks a Public Safety Dispatcher. The dispatcher receives and acts on emergency and non-emergency calls, monitors and dispatches district personnel, watches safety and security equipment and keeps logs in a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, evaluate and act on emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio calls
• Monitor and dispatch appropriate District personnel
• Monitor a variety of safety and security equipment
• Maintain logs and records using a CAD system
• Take appropriate action to protect property and personnel

Required profile

• Three years of customer service experience in a demanding, fast-paced environment, or equivalent training, experience and education
• Recent civilian or military experience in radio dispatching, public emergency information systems, law enforcement or a public safety CAD department is highly desirable
• High School Diploma or equivalent; a BA degree can be accepted in lieu of a diploma
• Typing speed of 30 words per minute and passing a computerized skills assessment
• Must be able to pass a background investigation covering criminal history, employment history, references, etc., and must not have a felony conviction

Required skills

• Pass a POST basic Public Safety Dispatcher certificate within one year of employment
• Completed a POST Public Safety Dispatcher course within the last three years (proof required)
• Typing certificate at 30 wpm
