Public Information Officer – Emergency Management

About the role

The Utah Division of Emergency Management is hiring a Public Information Officer to join its Public Outreach team. In this role you will support the division’s communication strategy, act as a media liaison and spokesperson, and help educate the public and stakeholders about emergency preparedness and response.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement communication strategies aligned with the DEM mission.
• Serve as the primary media contact, preparing subject‑matter experts for interviews and responding to media inquiries.
• Create and edit content for social media, email newsletters, publications, and the division’s websites using AP Style.
• Coordinate Integrated Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) messaging for state and local responses.
• Manage GRAMA requests, public information emails, and external/internal website projects.
• Enforce DEM visual branding and represent the division at public events and community activities.
• Participate in boards, councils, committees, and the Public Information Officers Association.

Required profile

• Ability to work collaboratively in person and with teleworkers.
• Strong analytical skills to interpret information and draw conclusions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
• Attention to confidentiality, accuracy, and relevance in all communications.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AP Style writing.
• Experience with the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS).
• Knowledge of the Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA) requirements.
• Social media content creation and website management.
• Brand enforcement and visual identity standards.
