Principal Software Architect

About the role

Carlsmed is seeking a Principal Software Architect to lead the design and evolution of its personalized spine surgery platform. You will shape the technical vision for a suite of proprietary implants, instrumentation, and design automation tools, ensuring the architecture scales with current demands and future growth.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical roadmap for the entire platform.
• Design scalable, maintainable architectures for complex distributed systems.
• Establish technical standards, best practices, and governance across the organization.
• Lead architectural reviews, make critical technology decisions, and mentor senior engineers.
• Guide teams in building Node.js‑based microservices and GraphQL federation.
• Architect high‑scale PostgreSQL solutions, including sharding and replication.
• Define API standards and integration patterns for seamless service interaction.
• Lead proof‑of‑concept initiatives and technical spikes to validate new approaches.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 10–15 years of software development experience with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work quickly without sacrificing quality.
• Experience in the spine or orthopedics domain is highly desired.
• Proven track record of delivering large‑scale technical initiatives.

Required skills

• Node.js ecosystem and microservices architecture.
• GraphQL, including federation and gateway patterns.
• React architecture, component libraries, and performance optimization.
• PostgreSQL at scale (sharding, replication, high‑availability).
• Design of distributed, high‑traffic systems.
