Principal Commissioning Engineer (PPL)

About the role

CB&I Storage Solutions is hiring a Principal Commissioning Engineer (PPL) in Plainfield, Illinois. This individual contributor subject matter expert supports complex commissioning, start-up and operations of structural and mechanical projects, working independently with minimal supervision and reporting to the Process and Mechanical Engineering Department Manager. The role combines home-office consulting with site work, and the engineer may train or supervise less experienced commissioning engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Produce deliverables to company standards and project commissioning specifications, and follow local engineering jurisdiction regulations and the code of ethics.
• Lead site commissioning as Person In Charge (PIC) and develop system scoping documents, turnover packages, schedules, testing procedures and reports.
• Help prepare project execution plans, cost estimates, subcontract requirements and risk management, and maintain a detailed commissioning schedule through handover.
• Act as subject matter expert for the commissioning team, coordinate final handover to the client and assist client operations with startup and performance testing.
• Train other commissioning specialists, ensure communication between engineering, construction and project management, and keep a focus on CB&I's end product.

Required profile

• Accredited BSChE, BSME or BSEE degree, or 10+ years of related industry experience; 15+ years of commissioning engineering experience.
• Experience in home office for systemization, design reviews, procedure and/or manual development.
• Knowledge of OSHA, NEC, IEEE, NFPA and ANSI codes and standards.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally on short notice and to be site-assigned for 6-12 months, including extended hours during start-up.
• Preferred: good interpersonal skills and ability to build professional relationships with clients and colleagues.

Required skills

• Broad technical knowledge of commissioning, including SIMOPS and parallel commissioning with construction.
• Effective communication of complex technical solutions to engineers and non-engineers.
• Use of computer applications and specialized engineering tools.
