Pharmacy Authorization Specialist

About the role
The Pharmacy Authorization Specialist coordinates prior authorizations, insurance verifications, and medication approvals to ensure timely patient care and accurate reimbursement. The role works closely with providers, pharmacies, insurers, and internal clinical and billing teams.
Key responsibilities
- Review provider orders, prescriptions, medical records, and insurance requirements to determine prior‑authorization needs.
- Submit authorization requests for medications, diagnostics, procedures, durable medical equipment, and other covered services.
- Verify patient insurance eligibility, benefits, coverage limits, deductibles, copays, and payer‑specific requirements.
- Communicate with insurers, pharmacy benefit managers, pharmacies, provider offices, and patients to obtain missing information and follow up on pending requests.
- Document authorization status, approvals, denials, appeals, reference numbers, and follow‑up actions in the appropriate system.
- Track requests to ensure timely completion and reduce treatment delays.
- Research and resolve denials, claim issues, and payer requests for additional documentation.
- Assist with appeals, reconsiderations, peer‑to‑peer coordination, and resubmission of corrected requests.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and adhere to payer policies and healthcare regulations.
- Collaborate with billing, clinical, pharmacy, scheduling, and patient services teams.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in healthcare administration, medical billing, pharmacy technology, or related field preferred.
- Experience in prior authorization, pharmacy, medical billing, insurance verification, or revenue‑cycle support preferred.
- Knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology, insurance plans, and payer requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret clinical documentation, prescription information, and authorization criteria.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Required skills
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Experience using pharmacy systems and insurance portals.
- Familiarity with practice management software.
- Competence with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
