Payments Engineer - Series A Fintech
eqltech · San Francisco
Job description
About the role
EQL Tech has been retained by a high-growth Series A fintech startup to appoint a Payments Engineer who owns the money-movement rails: card issuing, disbursements, reconciliation and regulatory reporting, end to end. The company was founded by engineers and has raised $16M from top-tier VCs and angels; it is building the financial rails to help families access State education funds (ESAs or School Choice Funds). The role is in-person in San Francisco, California.
Key responsibilities
- Design a money movement flow: ledgered internal state, transaction lifecycle management, idempotency, retries and deterministic replay.
- Own card issuing and banking-rail integrations, working with partners such as Lithic, Column and LoanPro.
- Build reliable reconciliation between the internal ledger, card network events, banking events and vendor reports, with tools to investigate mismatches quickly.
- Build guardrails against bad states such as double-spending, duplicate webhook processing, inconsistent balances and orphaned settlements.
- Own and evolve a multi-service monorepo covering an event-driven pipeline, a payments API, balance health checks and regulatory reporting jobs, including fraud and credit risk controls.
Required profile
- Able to work in person with the team in San Francisco, CA (visa support available).
- Experience with Lithic, Column, LoanPro, Stripe Issuing or comparable card and banking infrastructure is a strong plus.
What we offer
- Salary of $125,000 - $175,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
- Founding equity.
- Relocation support for candidates willing to move to San Francisco or Phoenix, AZ, and travel to visit customers.
- Visa sponsorship for those without a visa.
