Patient Services Representative

About the role

Optum NY/NJ, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Patient Services Representative for its Multi-Specialty practice in Newburgh, NY. The role is patient-focused and detailed-oriented, supporting the care team with registration, scheduling, payments and customer service. The office is open seven days a week, 365 days a year, with a 38-hour week of 4-10 hour shifts between 8:00 am and about 8:00 pm, rotating holidays and weekends.

Key responsibilities

• Greet and register patients, direct and schedule them, and receive payments, issue receipts and post payment data.
• Verify insurance eligibility and coverage, and patient demographics and insurance information at the time of service.
• Complete registration forms, consent forms and authorization to release health information, and collect payments by check, money order or credit card.
• Schedule, cancel and reschedule appointments, obtain HMO referrals and explain balances, co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles.
• Maintain supply inventories, keep the reception and waiting area tidy, and close the office each day.
• Handle patient complaints, escalate issues appropriately and document them accurately.
• Work independently, respond to emails promptly, and perform other duties as assigned.

• Punctuality, attendance and a positive work attitude.
• Good oral and written communication and flexibility to cover holidays and weekends.
• Cross-training across specialties and willingness to adapt to practice needs.
