Patient Care Technician - Float Pool Level 2

About the role

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for its Inpatient Float Pool. The Float Pool is a system-level team that supports more than 30 inpatient units across Clements University Hospital and Zale Lipshy Pavilion, including critical care, med/surg, oncology, telemetry, progressive care and rehabilitation. PCTs work under the direction of nursing staff, performing only tasks for which they have received training and validation.

Key responsibilities

• Collect patient data such as intake and output, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure, report abnormal values to the nurse and show awareness of age-specific considerations.
• Perform sterile procedures (sterile gloves, dressing changes, in/out cauterizations) in line with nursing and infection control policies.
• Report changes in a patient's condition or behaviour immediately and seek guidance when needed.
• Provide basic hygiene care, check the skin during baths and make frequent patient rounds to comfort, position and assist with toileting and hygiene.
• Transfer and transport patients safely, ensuring they are covered and wearing slippers.
• Welcome new patients and families respectfully, alerting the nurse if concerns arise.
• Document patient information accurately and on time.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; ability to read, write and communicate in English; familiarity with medical terminology.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification within 180 days.
• Preferred: at least 2 years of acute care inpatient hospital experience, or a certified nursing assistant or certified medical assistant certificate, or completion of the first semester of nursing clinicals.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of basic computer software.
• Patient assessment and documentation.
