About the role
The Parasitology Resident position is a combined doctoral (PhD) and residency appointment within the LSU College of Veterinary Medicine. The resident will split time between teaching, research, and specialized parasitology clinical service while working toward board certification through the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.
Key responsibilities
- Teach parasitology labs and didactic sessions for DVM students, maintain equipment and specimens, and support graduate and undergraduate teaching.
- Conduct research on the PI’s projects, focusing on dissertation work, data management, manuscript preparation, grant writing, and conference presentations.
- Complete residency service activities, including diagnostic testing, morphological identification, and proficiency in a range of parasitology assays.
- Supervise undergraduate and DVM students on research projects and summer scholar initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required profile
- DVM degree (or equivalent) with a strong interest in veterinary parasitology.
- Enrollment in a PhD program in Pathobiological Sciences or related field.
- Commitment to achieve board certification in the parasitology specialty.
Required skills
- Parasitology diagnostic tests and assays
- Morphological identification of parasite specimens, eggs, oocysts, and cysts
- Wet preparations, fecal flotation, sedimentation, Baermann technique, coproculture
- ELISA and Knott's test
- DNA extraction and PCR
