Optimization Software Engineer (Civil Aviation)

About the role

ASI is modernizing America's air traffic control system and is looking for an Optimization Software Engineer on its Civil Aviation team. The team builds next-generation trajectory prediction and decision-support systems to coordinate tens of thousands of daily flights safely, in preparation for commercial space operations and advanced air mobility. The engineer designs algorithms that help track and plan trajectories for aircraft in the National Airspace System.

Key responsibilities

• Design algorithms that help track and plan trajectories for thousands of aircraft in the National Airspace System.
• Use knowledge of operations research, optimization, statistics and data science to design, analyze and implement software that monitors and controls airspace in real time.

Required profile

• Experience designing algorithms for mission-critical applications.
• Experience with optimization algorithms such as linear programming, mixed integer linear programming and constraint satisfaction.
• Experience analyzing large data sets and building models with statistical and machine learning techniques.
• Domain experience in logistics, aviation or related fields where large-scale planning is required.
• Strong collaboration skills and comfort working across teams in a mission-critical environment.

Required skills

• Modern programming languages such as Rust and Python.
• Proficiency with modern LLM tools to speed up development workflows and improve code quality.

ASI works with export-controlled technology and restricted U.S. Government data, and employment offers are contingent on obtaining the required authorizations.
