Ophthalmic Technician 1 – Refractive Services (Full Time)

About the role

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician 1 to join its Refractive Services team at the Lasik & Laser Vision Center in Miami. This full‑time position supports diagnostic and procedural workflows for patients undergoing refractive eye care.

Key responsibilities

• Perform ophthalmic testing, measurements, and specialty‑specific procedures following established protocols.
• Prepare patients for diagnostic studies, treatments, or procedures, explaining processes and answering questions.
• Obtain and document patient histories, clinical findings, test results, and procedural data in the electronic medical record.
• Operate ophthalmic instruments, imaging systems, and specialty equipment relevant to refractive services.
• Assist physicians and care teams with examinations and procedures, providing pre‑ and post‑procedure support.
• Identify and communicate abnormal findings or technical issues according to escalation procedures.
• Maintain exam rooms, procedure areas, and equipment to meet safety and infection‑control standards.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent; relevant experience may substitute.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant ophthalmic or clinical experience.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Demonstrated learning agility, teamwork, and clear communication skills.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Proficiency operating ophthalmic instruments and imaging systems.
• Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) documentation.
• Competence with standard office software and computer applications.
