Open Source Engineering Manager

About the role

NetApp is looking for an Open Source Engineering Manager in Morrisville, NC, to lead its Open Source Contributions team and help keep NetApp Instaclustr influential in key open source ecosystems such as Cassandra, OpenSearch, Kafka and Cadence. The role works closely with Product, Engineering, Developer Relations, Support and Marketing to turn customer and business needs into upstream contributions and community engagement, and mentors a globally distributed team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and grow a distributed team of open source engineers.
• Define and execute the open source engagement strategy and team OKRs.
• Partner with Product Management to bring community feedback into product planning.
• Work with Product, Engineering and Support to resolve complex issues involving upstream projects.
• Represent NetApp in strategic open source communities, foundations and working groups, and build relationships with maintainers.
• Track team objectives, delivery plans, risks, budgets and resource allocation.
• Drive hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching and career development.
• Promote best practices for community participation and encourage adoption of AI tools that improve productivity.
• Give regular executive updates, take part in community discussions and attend industry events.

Required profile

• 8+ years of relevant industry experience and 3+ years of people management or leadership experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a related field; equivalent practical experience also considered.
• Experience with distributed engineering teams, working across Product, Engineering, Support and Developer Relations, and influencing without authority.
• Willingness to work asynchronously in a global team and occasionally meet outside normal hours.

Required skills

• Understanding of open source development models, communities and licensing.
• Ability to review code and use Git, CI/CD pipelines and IDEs.
• Working knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
• Preferred: experience contributing to or leading open source projects, familiarity with Cassandra, OpenSearch, Kafka or Cadence, and knowledge of storage technologies.

• Target salary range of 196,350 - 292,600 USD, depending on location, qualifications and experience.
