Mobile Equipment Operator – Road & Bridge Maintenance

About the role

Mobile Equipment Operators support the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development by operating heavy machinery to maintain and construct state roads and bridges. The position offers on‑the‑job training, a clear career path, and a 10 % base‑pay increase after attaining permanent status.

Key responsibilities

• Operate heavy and specialized equipment for road and bridge maintenance and construction.
• Assist with repair, upkeep, and emergency response activities on highways.
• Perform routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance.
• Support traffic control, site cleanup, and material handling using hand and power tools.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including shift, night, overtime, and emergency call‑outs.
• Guide or assist lower‑level operators as needed.

Required profile

• Reliability and strong safety awareness.
• Physical ability to lift, load materials and perform manual tasks.
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Valid Louisiana Class “D” Chauffeur’s License or CDL for certain levels (or ability to obtain before start date).
• No prior experience required; training will be provided.

Required skills

What we offer

• Hourly wage of $16.06 (MEO 1) or $17.18 (MEO 2) plus $1.00 premium pay.
• 10 % base‑pay increase upon permanent appointment.
