Mission Systems Engineer II (Avionics Integration)

About the role

Shield AI is a defense-tech company developing intelligent systems that protect service members and civilians, including the V-BAT aircraft. As a Mission Systems Engineer II, you will support the hands-on integration of avionics, sensors and mission payloads onto the V-BAT and its next-generation aircraft. The role suits engineers with a mix of hardware and software experience, moving from integration and system bring-up to real-time troubleshooting.

Key responsibilities

• Support the design, integration and validation of avionics, mission sensors and payloads for V-BAT, from concept through production and deployment.
• Work with operators, mission subject matter experts and stakeholders to understand user needs and prioritise system features.
• Drive 0 to 1 development: turn loosely defined mission problems into prototypes, iterate with flight test data and mature systems to production readiness.
• Work with mechanical, electrical, software and flight test teams on design, firmware/embedded interfaces, data paths, networking and onboard software integration.
• Debug and troubleshoot complex hardware, software and integration failures, and support real-time troubleshooting and post-mission data analysis.
• Run hands-on bring-up, lab testing and HIL testing, and prepare for flight tests.
• Analyse logs and automate tests using Python, MATLAB or similar tools.

Required profile

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field.
• 2 to 5 years of engineering experience in electrical system design, integration, testing, debug and repair.
• Hands-on experience with test equipment, schematics, harness/wiring diagrams and HW/SW debugging.
• Experience on multidisciplinary hardware projects, such as an internship, job, club, team or personal project.
• Ability to own tasks and deliver reliably in a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience integrating avionics, sensors, radios, mission payloads or flight computing systems.
• Flight test, field testing or hardware-in-the-loop experience.
• Python or other scripting language experience.
• Active Secret security clearance or ability to obtain one.
• Adaptability and innovation under pressure.
