Medical Officer – Department of Operational Support

About the role

The Department of Operational Support is seeking a qualified Medical Officer to join the Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH) in New York. Reporting to the Medical Director, the incumbent will provide clinical, occupational, and travel‑medicine services to United Nations staff and coordinate medical support across UN entities.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver day‑to‑day clinical care, including walk‑in clinic consultations and emergency response.
• Conduct occupational health duties such as pre‑placement and periodic medical examinations, travel health preparations, immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, and travel kit distribution.
• Provide health education and promotion programs for UN personnel.
• Manage medical evacuations, liaise with UN medical units and host‑nation facilities, and ensure compliance with UN medical policies.
• Process sick leave, child benefits, and coordinate with HR partners across UN agencies.
• Serve as focal point for Health and Life Insurance matters, reviewing high‑cost claims and supporting policy renewal.
• Produce data analysis on medevac, sick leave, and benefit activities.
• Deputize for other Medical Officers and contribute to business continuity and crisis‑preparedness planning.

Required profile

• Medical degree with professional experience in clinical, occupational, and tropical/travel medicine.
• Formal training in CPR; preferably certified in BCLS and ACLS.
• Demonstrated ability to work in an international, multi‑agency environment.
• Strong organizational and communication skills, with a commitment to professionalism.
