Medical Assistant - Laboratory Support

About the role

Florida Oncology and Hematology is hiring a Medical Assistant to assist physicians with medical procedures in the office and support the laboratory. The role covers phlebotomy, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting and maintenance. The pay range is $15.83 - $24.37.

Key responsibilities

• Perform quality control before patient testing, draw blood, run blood work and handle specimens according to laboratory procedures
• Prepare blood or bone marrow slides, send specimens to outside labs and maintain test and quality control logs and equipment records
• Follow the AON patient ID policy, obtain vital signs, height, weight, pain level and PHQ9 screening, and place patients in the exam room
• Receive lab reports and document them in the patient chart or EMR, and document all testing and treatment thoroughly
• Assist with bone marrow, fine needle aspirate, paracentesis and pelvic exams, and schedule outside tests, referrals and hospital admissions
• Maintain supply inventory, order supplies, troubleshoot instrument malfunctions and perform EKG testing where applicable
• Keep the laboratory compliant with state and federal regulations, protect patient confidentiality, and train new employees
• Willingness to work at any AON location and to work overtime when given sufficient notice

Required profile

• High school or GED; certification or license as required by the state of employment
• Valid driver's license and a vehicle for travel between clinic locations
• At least one year of experience as a medical assistant in a clinic or physician's office, including venipuncture
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-site environment and to work remotely when required

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and EMR software
• Good command of English; second language is an asset
• Ability to take the required annual CEUs to meet COLA requirements
