Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and delivery of cable magnet hardware for its fusion projects such as SPARC and ARC. You will own the hardware from concept through manufacturing and installation, ensuring it meets stringent performance and safety requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and iterate cable magnet designs, performing thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analyses.
• Create design notes, technical specifications, and documentation required for manufacturing and installation.
• Coordinate with R&D, analysis, manufacturing, and procurement teams to meet program milestones.
• Support procurement by preparing and executing manufacturing contracts.
• Diagnose production and assembly issues, propose root‑cause solutions, and implement design changes.
• Prepare reports and presentations that validate final cable magnet systems.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of engineering design and analysis experience, including at least 2 years supporting production hardware.
• Hands‑on experience designing parts for high loads or extreme environments.
• Strong understanding of static structures, heat transfer, and material behavior.
