Meat Department Manager

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Meat Department Manager for its Cresco Dollar Fresh Market. The manager sets the department's standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance and profitability, and coordinates the delivery of fresh, high-quality products at competitive prices. The position is non-exempt.

Key responsibilities

• Create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and set department standards for service, cleanliness and sanitation
• Greet customers, learn their names, escort them to products, load or unload heavy items and answer phones and take product orders
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline and evaluate department employees, and determine weekly schedules and daily work plans
• Determine department goals with the store director, inspect displays, order product for replenishment and plan displays and promotions
• Handle customer issues, figure retail pricing, extend and post invoices and oversee department bookkeeping
• Analyze weekly and monthly sales and trends, prepare ad projections and write ads, and conduct department inventory
• Maintain proper temperatures and storage to control shrink, troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance, and keep strict adherence to hygiene and dress guidelines
• Supervisory duties include instructing and assigning work, approving discipline, recommending transfers, discharge and salary increases
• Secondary duties include filling displays, working in the sales area, unloading trucks, attending meetings and seminars, and performing other store duties as needed

Required profile

• High school or equivalent, computer meat program and Hy-Vee food safety training; Dale Carnegie is encouraged
• Over one year of related work experience preferred
• Ability to think logically and solve problems, do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages, and read technical manuals
• Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly, with normal vision, depth perception and color vision
• Working conditions include exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, cleaning chemicals and equipment hazards; employment is contingent on a pre-employment drug screen
