Meat Department Manager

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Meat Department Manager for its Cresco Dollar Fresh Market. The manager sets the department's standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance and profitability, and coordinates the delivery of fresh, high-quality products at competitive prices. The position is non-exempt.

Key responsibilities

• Create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and set department standards for service, cleanliness and sanitation
• Greet customers, learn their names, help them find products and answer phones promptly
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline and evaluate department employees
• Determine department goals with the store director, set weekly schedules and daily work plans
• Inspect displays, order product, figure retail pricing, extend and post invoices and oversee bookkeeping
• Analyze sales and trends, prepare ad projections and write ads, conduct inventory and plan displays and promotions
• Maintain proper temperatures and storage, troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance
• Handle customer issues, keep pricing competitive and attend meetings and continuing education
• Fill displays, unload trucks, check in merchandise and assist in other store areas as needed
• Supervise staff, approve discipline, recommend transfers, discharge and salary increases

Required profile

• High school or equivalent, computer meat program and Hy-Vee food safety training; Dale Carnegie encouraged
• Over one year of related work experience preferred
• Ability to think logically, do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages, and read technical manuals
• Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly, plus climbing, stooping, kneeling and repetitive motion
• Visual acuity from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, with color vision and depth perception

The work is fast-paced, involves daily exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, cleaning chemicals and equipment hazards, and requires responsibility for company assets and access to confidential information such as sales and inventory data.
