Meat Clerk

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Meat Clerk in its meat department in Savage. The role provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service, wraps, trims, stocks cases and receives merchandise in the meat and/or seafood department. Night and weekend shifts are required.

Key responsibilities

• Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service, greet customers by name when possible, and help them find products, load or unload heavy items and pass on their suggestions.
• Answer the telephone and take customer orders.
• Wrap, weigh and label product; trim steaks, roasts and chops and prepare seafood for display.
• Check food freshness, stock cases, rotate product and replenish coolers.
• Tray, slice, tenderize and grind product, and remove trash.
• Follow sanitation procedures, keep the work area clean and adhere to hygiene and dress guidelines.
• Report out-of-stock products to the appropriate personnel.
• Secondary duties include preparing some department signs, ordering replenishment merchandise as directed by management, helping in other store areas and doing special projects.

Required profile

• High school or equivalent education and food safety training.
• Six months or less of similar or related work.
• Ability to follow written or verbal instructions, do simple addition and subtraction, count and record figures.
• Physical ability to lift up to 85 pounds occasionally, 40 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly, plus climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching and standing.
• Good vision, depth perception, color vision and field of vision, with or without correction.

Working conditions

• Continually exposed to a cool, damp environment, frequent noise from saws, cleaning solvents and the possibility of electrical shock.
• Fast-paced work environment; night and weekend shifts required.
• Equipment used includes knives, grinders, slicer, tenderizer, pallet jack and rotisserie.

The anticipated hourly starting wage is $13.50 to $16.80 depending on experience. Employment is contingent on a successful pre-employment drug screen.
