Machine Operator I - Pipe Flanging and Machining

About the role

McWane Plant and Industrial (MPI) is looking for an experienced Machine Operator I to join its Job Shop Fabrication and Machining operation. The operator measures, threads, adjusts flange fit and faces flanges on pieces of ductile or steel pipe, using manual machine tools such as lathes and threaders, and operates the machines and crane to move pipe in and out of machining centers. The position reports to the Branch Manager, works 3:00 PM to 12:00 AM, and pays $20.81 starting with a 24-month wage progression.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure personal and team safety, wear appropriate PPE, and keep the work area clean
• Follow the Clear Water Safety Management Program and report deviations to management
• Identify fabrication requirements for each piece of pipe, place and center the pipe in the machine, and tighten it
• Machine tapered threads into the pipe and verify thread depth and taper
• Test the flange, apply glue, and tighten the flange onto the pipe
• Threaders: remove the pipe and move it to the next operation; lathes: run the cutting tool across the flange face to flush-fit it
• Work mainly with pipe and flanges 3" to 6" in diameter and 4 inches to 18 feet long
• Meet production output targets and work overtime and extended hours when needed

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent desired
• Previous experience with machinery desired
• Ability to read a tape measure and micrometer, good with math
• Ability to understand machinery processes and to work in dust and fumes
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly, 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally
• Ability to work outside in all weather and tolerate loud noise
• Forklift operation and certification required
