Legal Officer – International Law (Temporary)

About the role

The Office of Legal Affairs is seeking a Legal Officer to join its General Legal Division in New York. This temporary, full‑time position supports senior legal staff in interpreting and applying international legal instruments that govern United Nations activities.

Key responsibilities

• Handle issues related to international commercial, public and private law, and administrative law.
• Conduct extensive legal research, draft briefs, memoranda, reports and correspondence.
• Review legal documents, identify key issues, inconsistencies and provide analysis.
• Prepare legal opinions on a wide range of substantive and procedural matters, including procurement, contracts, peacekeeping, claims, arbitrations and administrative appeals.
• Assist in negotiating and settling disputes, advising on strategy, settlement terms and risk exposure.
• Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts with commercial vendors, NGOs and other entities.
• Support committees, working groups and task forces by preparing background material and meeting reports.
• Represent the Organization in arbitral tribunals and administrative proceedings, including the United Nations Appeals Tribunal.

Required profile

• Law degree with expertise in international and administrative law.
• Experience conducting legal research and drafting high‑quality legal documents.
• Familiarity with United Nations legal frameworks, procurement and contract law.
• Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.
