Lead Rental Technician - South Plainfield, NJ

About the role

The Home Depot is hiring a Lead Rental Technician (LRT) in South Plainfield, NJ, who repairs light construction equipment such as skid steers, chippers, trenchers and mini-excavators at a group of stores or nearby customer job sites. The schedule is Tuesday to Saturday, 7am-4pm, and candidates must live within 15 miles of South Plainfield. The position reports to the regional field operations manager and has no direct reports.

Key responsibilities

• Repair, maintain and diagnose all components of rental equipment, including gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, fuel systems and brakes
• Deploy new equipment to stores, perform pre-delivery inspections (PDIs), deliver it and train store associates and customers on its safe operation
• Maintain a parts inventory, obtain parts for repairs and document all work using the company technology platform
• Review the down equipment report, prioritize repairs and service calls, and assist with equipment deliveries and pickups
• Support rental associates and customers during the rental period, including delivery, and explain the large equipment program

Required profile

• Able to diagnose and complete advanced mechanical repairs, including engines, hydraulics and electrical systems
• Ability to read technical repair and parts manuals
• Valid driver's license in the state of application; overnight travel under 10% of the time
• Physical ability to stand, walk and lift moderate-weight material (8-20 pounds); usually a comfortable environment with occasional exposure to dust, fumes or odors
• Preferred: high school diploma or GED, 3 years of experience, and experience repairing gas/diesel engines or automotive and industrial equipment

Required skills

• Advanced mechanical repair of engines, hydraulics and electrical systems
• Reading and understanding technical repair and parts manuals
• Working knowledge of handheld technology (smartphone, laptop, tablet)
• Ability to work in extreme outdoor conditions
