Journeyman Lineman (IBEW Team)

About the role

The City of Geneva Electric Utility, part of the City of Geneva Public Works Department, is hiring three journeyman linemen for its IBEW-represented team. Vacancies cover two divisions, generation and field service, and the work is described as offering strong pay and benefits without living on storm calls. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with a rotating stand-by/on-call schedule and possible after-hours response to outages and storms.

Key responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair components of the electric utility system, including overhead and underground distribution systems.
• Isolate and correct electrical faults, breaks and cuts.
• Work safely with high-voltage overhead and underground cables, transformers and related equipment.
• Operate a backhoe and bucket/boom truck, and maintain assigned tools and equipment.
• Read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
• Interact professionally with supervisors, contractors, engineers and property owners, and use a computer to enter, extract and query data.

Required profile

• Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program (ALBAT or similar).
• Journeyman Lineman certification.
• Ability to obtain a State of Illinois Class A CDL driver's license within six months of hire.
• Residency within 16 miles of the city limits within one year of hire.
• Preferred: five years of experience as a journeyman lineman, experience in distribution systems and a strong safety record.
• Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds, work in uncomfortable conditions, work at heights and distinguish primary colors.

Required skills

• Knowledge of tools, equipment, hazards, safety precautions and codes for overhead and underground electric distribution.
• CDL Class A (or ability to obtain it).
• Effective communication and computer data entry.
